What It Will Take To Win Today: Advice for Hotel Owners, Brands, and Management Companies
with Anthony Melchiorri
"The hotel industry is very interconnected and depends on effective working relationships between owners, brands, and management companies," Anthony told me recently as he reflected on the challenges facing the hospitality industry, including the escalating development, investment, and operational costs.
The Crucial Triad: Owners, Brands, and Management Companies
These three relationships will make or break our industry in the next 10 years.
While specialization can provide benefits, losing sight of what matters is dangerous. "Are we really keeping the soul of our industry? Are we protecting it?"
The Challenge: An Experience Gap
In Anthony’s view, the departure of experienced hospitality leaders over the past few years has significantly impacted the industry. "You're losing 15, 20 years of experience all at once," he said. “There’s a big ‘I’ve been there before gap.’”
Don’t Skip On-Property Skills Development
Anthony believes hospitality companies need to focus heavily on on-the-ground training because of this loss of experienced talent over the past few years.
We need to get away from just training on computers. We have to provide real-life experience.
In his view, even people who want to work in corporate roles in hospitality should go through property-level training and work experience to get context and perspective.
Personal Interaction and Support
When discussing his approach to leadership, Anthony shared the value of direct communication and genuine concern for people’s needs over superficial interactions.
I'm not a guy who goes, how was the football game last night? I don't care. I'm asking, how are you? Is the manager treating you well? Do you have what you need? That's how you help people.
You don't help people by asking people how the football game was last night. I want to know, what do you need to be successful in this job? That's my job.
Be Transparent and Share the 'Why'
Anthony focuses on ensuring people get what they need to do their jobs, but that doesn’t mean always telling people what they want to hear. He believes that people can accept anything if they understand the reasoning behind decisions.
Tell people the why. Almost everyone can understand the why. They just want to be informed.
Focusing on this type of leadership and collaboration will help all of us in hospitality navigate any challenge the industry may face. By understanding and valuing the symbiotic relationship between the key stakeholders in the industry, taking steps to bridge the experience gap, leveraging technology wisely, and fostering transparent and supportive communication, any hospitality provider can succeed.
Anthony wrapped up our conversation by encouraging us to step back and look at the big picture to remind ourselves of progress.
Because of advances in medicine and technology, we really are living in the best of times now. The question is, how will we use this moment?
